Google is giving all users a treat today, serving up a Google doodle honoring Russian abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. Today would have been the artist’s 148th birthday.

While Kandinsky worked in various styles, he is most well known as the “Father of Abstract Art,” and painted a number of now famous abstract portraits, including: Blue, Black and Violet, On White II, Yellow, Red, Blue and Composition VIII, which, from my own interpretation, serves as the inspiration for today’s Google Doodle.

“I remember that drawing and a little bit later painting lifted me out of the reality.”

During Kandinsky’s career as an artist, he worked as an art teacher and authored a number of books on art theory, including, Concerning the Spiritual in Art (Du Spirituel dans l’art).

In one of Kandinsky’s most influential art theory books, Point and Line to Plane, the artist focuses on the relationship between the geographic elements of a painting, texture, the element of time, and how it all combines to impact the observer.

Kadinsky didn’t start as an artist. Following his family’s wishes, he entered law school and graduated with honors. His career began as a law professor, until, at age 30, he left his professional position to commit himself full-time to the study of art.

A number of resources claim Kandinsky was greatly influenced in 1896 after viewing Monet’s “Haystacks” at an exhibit at Giverny, and hearing Wagner’s “Lohengrin” at the Bolshoi Theater, both moving him to devote himself to art.

As we head into 2015, Kandinsky’s devotion to his passion may serve as the perfect inspiration when considering New Year’s resolutions.
